Running a Sunbed Business
Commercial sunbed tanning first became popular in the 1980s. In a small country like NZ with low population numbers, the huge chain tanning franchise model of North America and Europe never came to light, and most sunbeds were added into gyms, beauty and hair salons as single units.

As the provision of sunbed services became more controversial, the failure of many of these operators to invest properly in their service became obvious. Today the very small group of 'tanning-only' operators and market suppliers face the huge task of encouraging compliance in the industry in the face of relentless pressure by groups who believe indoor sunbathing should be outlawed.

If you are currently a sunbed operator, or you are thinking about becoming one, you need to understand the minimum requirements that will ensure your operation's compliance.

Requirements for Compliance


  1. There is a voluntary Standard set of guidelines to running a tanning operation in New Zealand (AS/NZS 2635:2008 Solaria for Cosmetic Purposes). The guideline is prohibited from being shared by Standards New Zealand and is available to buy at the Standards WebShop. All sunbed operators should have a copy and all staff attending to tanning customers should be familar with the Standard.

    In principle and for the most part Get Brown Tanning agrees with the Standard as a guideline for responsible provision of indoor tanning services. On some points however we have cause to disagree. Our document 'Position on Standard 2635' thoroughly addresses these points and concerns, while suggesting alternative points and more workable 'in-salon' guidelines.

  2. A more workable version of the Standard's requirements has been produced by the National Radiation Lab (NRL). You can download a copy of the Guidelines for tanning operators for free. Our document 'Position on NRL Guidelines' outlines any points of concern we have with this publication.

  3. The INTANZ organisation was set up in 2008 to protect individual freedom to tan and to provide a voice for the sunbed industry. Click here for membership information or to view the INTANZ website click here.

NZ Commerce Commission Announcement 2011


In August the NZ Commerce Commission concluded a review into alleged misleading claims by sunbed operators. The result of this review was to send a 'warning' letter to around 280 sunbed operators including advice on staying compliant and keeping your operation within the requirements of the Fair Trading Act 1986.
